Poems by Western Canadian Spellers

Pointed Poetry is a groundbreaking collection that reveals the extraordinary minds of those previously misunderstood and underestimated. These poems were written by non/minimally/unreliably speaking individuals one letter at a time on a letterboard or keyboard. These communication tools have unlocked the brilliance, wisdom, and deep emotional insight of individuals previously thought to be cognitively delayed.

Each poem is a testament to the power of silent thought and the richness of the inner world of neurodivergent minds. What was once seen as the ‘trapped mind’ of an autistic person is now a flowing river of thought, ingenuity, and creativity.

Once unreachable, now unlocked.

Themes of isolation, longing, liberation, and transcendence are explored with sensitivity, as the poets use their beautifully articulated words to build bridges between their minds and the world.

This collection challenges conventional ideas of intelligence, encouraging readers to reconsider how they perceive people with diverse abilities.

Proceeds from Pointed Poetry will support a community fund aligned with Mentoring Minds' mission:
“where every mind finds its voice.”

In the spirit of respect, gratitude and truth, Mentoring Minds honours and acknowledges that we operate on the ancestral home of Treaty 7 signatories, including the Siksika Nation, Piikani Nation, Kainai Nation, Iethka Stoney Nakoda Nation (consisting of the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Goodstoney Nations) and the people of the Tsuut’ina Nation. This is also homeland to the Northwest Métis, Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elbow Métis District 6. We make this acknowledgement of the treaty and the lands as a reminder of our duties and responsibilities to the land and Indigenous peoples, and of our obligation to address the ongoing impacts of colonization that continue to affect Indigenous communities.
